Author Kathy Stemke Pays a Visit to Patricia Crandall

MEET KATHY STEMKE:

"Moving Through All Seven Days"

I'm very excited to announce that Action Alley Education is close to publishing, Moving Through All Seven Days. This book inspires movement as children learn about the days of the week. The lyrical rhymes also teach them how to spell each day! The activities at the end of the book are designed to reinforce the concepts as well as give impetus to movement exploration.
The illustration to the left is from the new book. Tony Glisson is the talented illustrator who cleverly depicts the fun we have on Saturday.
That's exciting news, Kathy. Now tell our readers a little about yourself. Where are you from?

I'm originally from New York. I went to school in Connecticut and stayed there many years. In 1990, I moved to Georgia, and I now live in the North Georgia Mountains.

When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing poetry when I was a teenager to express all those new feelings and frustrations.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was an anthology of poems and photography. I've always liked using mixed mediums to express myself.

Do you have a poem that you could share with us?

Sure, here's one:

"Dance."

The mirror of my soul

Reflects from deep within my core.

Dance with unconscious roots

From the murmur of blood is born.

A moment captured in time,

Expanding rays of light in space,

Soaring beyond Earth's grip,

Imagination takes a visible place.

An innate force that must be released.

Synopsis of Book

Bubba hates it when his dad gets a contract for a new project. That means uprooting the family from one city and moving to another. Attending a new school is a major pet peeve of his. His smart alecky nature attracts the bullies in every school he's attended.

On the first day of school, Bubba bumps into this rather large student. Fearing a confrontation, he wears his tough guy attitude and waits for the punches to begin. Remarkably, the new student apologizes, and Bubba and David (aka Giganto as Bubba eventually nicknames him) become best friends.

Bubba and Giganto try out for the high school soccer team, and that's when trouble begins. Bubba knew eventually he'd meet the bullies of the school, and he was right.

In the first initial weeks, Bubba learns about a death that occurred the previous year; faces the bullies on several occasions; helps Giganto practice soccer before tryouts; and challenges the bullies to a scrimmage.

Little does Bubba know Giganto holds a secret - one that will place Giganto in a deadly situation.

Author Margaret Fieland Drops by to Visit with Dwight Rounds

Born and raised in New York City, Margaret Fieland has been around art and music all her life. Daughter of a painter, she is the mother of three grown sons and an accomplished flute and piccolo player. She is an avid science fiction fan, and selected Robert A. Heinlein's "Farmer in the Sky" for her tenth birthday, now long past. She lives in the suburbs west of Boston, MA with her partner and seven dogs. Her poems, articles and  stories have appeared in journals and anthologies such as  Main Channel Voices, Echolocation, and Twisted Tongue. In spite of making her living as a computer software engineer, she turned to one of her sons to format the initial version of her website, a clear illustration of the computer generation gap. You may visit her website, http://www.margaretfieland.com.

So, Margaret, tell us about what you write:

A: I'm a professional Computer Software engineer – BA in mathematics, MS in computer science, and it never even occurred to me to be a writer. That said, I've written poetry as far back as I can remember – somehow that didn't "count" -- but not with publication in mind and not with any level  of dedication. At present, I'm writing nonfiction ( a monthly column for an ezine, FemmeVip http://www.femmevip.com – poetry and stories, especially children's stories.

I sort of fell into writing for publication. I'm far from the best organized person going, so though I wrote tons of poetry, I didn't keep it organized in any way. Finally, I wrote a poem I wanted to keep – and wanted to, and did, see published – so I looked around for a way to organize that I could cope with.

Since I'm a computer professional, I used more than one computer – and also I'm paranoid about backup – so I put the online. At first I had them in my Yahoo briefcase. Later I switched to Google documents, which I like much better.

Q: Do you have a favorite thing that you've ever written?
A: I have a couple of poems that hold a special place in my heart. One is "Booze," the poem that got me started getting organized. I also have an unpublished story, "Sherwood," that's making the rounds that I'm very fond of, and my chapter book, "The Ugly Little Boy."

Q:Do you have a favorite character that you write about? If so, who is it, what
makes it your favorite and tell us about the character.

A:My current favorite character is a little girl, Heather. I originally wrote a silly piece about my kids and some of the stuff they'd done – sort of flash fiction/prose poetry, and the characters were Which, Why, and Whether. The focus was on Why. The characters were modeled after my sons, now grown. Then I decided I needed to expand the thing and wanted real names, so the first two ended up as "Mitch" and "Wyatt." I tried to come up with a boy's version of "Whether," but I kept coming back to "Heather." I've written some stories about the characters, and plan to do more, perhaps a chapter book, and, well, Heather took over {grin} and she ended up being the focus of the stories. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with  Heather and her brothers, but she's on my list of things to do in 2009

Q: Almost every writer is inspired by someone else. Does anyone inspire you?
A: Lewis Carroll. My all time favorite book is "Alice in Wonderland," which I reread every exam time when I was in college, as I made it a habit to avoid the library during exams

Author Ransom Noble visits with Anna Maria Prezio

We're excited to have author Ransom Noble drop by for a visit on her Virtual Book Tour. Ransom Noble has always loved stories. She's been an avid reader and writer as long as she can remember. Believing determination can help one attain any goal, she set her sights high and achieved many goals. Her love of the sciences led her to a career in mechanical engineering and often pushes her imagination into the speculative fiction realm.

Ransom and her husband enjoy watching movies and playing games with their friends. She likes to go see local bands play and occasionally attends sports events at her alma mater. Her live-and-let-live policy extends to stinging insects and spiders, which earned her the nickname the Wasp Whisperer. Ransom currently resides in Des Moines, Iowa, though she's lived several other places. She's sure she isn't fond of snow since she was born in Modesto, California, and didn't learn what it was until she was eight. She graduated from engineering at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Her work includes "Qui's Contract," a short story that appeared in Ruins Metropolis in June 2008 and The Art of Science, which will be published in 2009.

Ranson, we'd love to know more about you, so here goes:

  1. What three words do you think describe you as a human being?

Creative, determined, curious

2. How do you think others would describe you?

About the same way. Some would say caring instead of curious, I think.

3. Please tell us what you are most passionate about outside of writing.

Yoga. I used to teach, but have moved and not yet found a new class. Now waiting until I have the baby before finding a new venue- I hate restricting students to my pregnancy routines, though they are more challenging than most in my condition.

4. Do you have any pets? If so, introduce us to them.

I have three plants. Peace is a peace lily, Porthos is a creeping Charlie type, and the geranium that graces my doorstep in the summer months.

7. If you weren't a writer, what would you be doing with your life?

I've just retired from mechanical engineering, and I enjoy yoga. Have previously been part of an at-home sales jewelry company. Next year I'll become a mother.

9. Can you describe the time you realized you were indeed a "real" writer?

This year I've been working hard to send out a lot of things. The first time I got an acceptance email, I squealed. I jumped up and down in my chair (luckily no one else was in the house.

10. What is going on with your writing these days?

Working on my second YA novel and I just finished a submission to a science-fiction anthology.
